From Screens to Stitches

During the pandemic, we were confined to our homes, and like many teenagers, I also turned to digital entertainment to cope. I spent a lot of time on my gadgets, either playing games or scrolling through social media. After about a year, I realized I no longer wanted to be consumed by technology. The negative effects of too much screen time started to concern me, and I knew I needed to change. That’s when I began exploring other hobbies that didn’t involve much digital use, and crocheting caught my attention. I had seen it before but never really looked into how it worked.

Using whatever materials I had at home, I gave crocheting a try. At first, I found it challenging, but I saw potential and thought I might actually enjoy it. So, I asked my mom to buy me some proper crochet tools. Once I had the right supplies, I picked it up quickly—starting with basic stitches and eventually moving on to shapes.

Crocheting became a way for me to pass the time without damaging my eyes from screens. I love the repetitive motion of the hook and the satisfaction that comes from seeing my progress as I create something from scratch. It helps me stay occupied and keeps my mind off any problems I might be dealing with. My favorite projects are flowers like daisies and sunflowers, but I’m especially proud of the roses and tulips I’ve made.

However, crocheting can be an expensive hobby. Yarns are used up quickly, and they can be pricey, but I think it’s worth it because it brings me so much joy. I usually follow guides I find online, but one of my future goals is to create my own patterns. I also want to try making more complex items, like animals—especially cats, dogs, and bears. Despite the challenges, I love this hobby because it’s easy, relaxing, and the products are just so cute!
